Tomlinson Death / G2 Protest (or Quis Custodiet Custodiens?)

No charges to be brought against policeman seen / filmed / photographed clubbing elderly newsagent walking home away from protest.

Deborah Coles, of Inquest, called for an inquiry into the actions of all the public bodies involved in the case.

She said: "The eyes of the world will be looking on with incredulity as yet again a police officer is not facing any criminal charges after what is one of the most clear cut and graphic examples of police violence that has led to death.

"This decision is a shameful indictment of the way police criminality is investigated and demonstrates a culture of impunity when police officers break the law.

"It follows a pattern of cases that reveal an unwillingness to treat deaths arising from the use of force by police as potential homicides.

"It demonstrates yet again the flawed procedures that follow contentious deaths involving the police and stands as testament to their unaccountability."

Enough said?

Among the most interesting films currently in production - one about family therapy (for the NHS) and the other about people who have been to the lowest point in life and are now starting to come back (for the NGO Horton). The power of the human spirit is impressive, and the random stupidity with which the government is treating Britain's welfare sector is dumb-founding. Our current work for Save the Children is about volunteers and how they can make a difference. Lord protect us from millionaires in cabinet.

Very busy April, making two films about the clients of Horton Housing - their activities and interests. The filming is always so fascinating, the stories at times very moving and others downright infuriating. Injustice and lack of opportunity can hold back so much that could help Britain just now. Working this month for Save the Children on a new fund-raising film, which involved filming in Hampshire at a 50/50 sale which regularly brings in profits above £20,000. This isn't a jumble sale, more a phenomenon. We are producing a DVD that will help other SC supporters set up similar fund-raising events. Meanwhile, Cambridge University should soon be receiving the final master edit of their new marketing DVD. That's the Rugby Club, of course..

With the snow gone, we were out and about filming this month - but close to base. We shot inspections of renovated homes for young mums in Keighley, and a very lively clients' consultation in Halifax, both for Horton Housing Association. We are researching and scheduling a new DVD for this multi-service agency, and plan to hand over much of the on-screen presentation to the people who use the suppport services themselves. So, instead of creating 'top-down' messaging we hope to build more of a grassroots voice. Fingers crossed. Edit suite two is still full of rugby players - well, the Oxford University Rugby DVD is about to go to final edit - and edit one is about to be filled with Cambridge rugby. Our support for Save the Children currently involves post-production on a DVD outlining possible future volunteer strategy, and also some creative input to the charity's election lobbying. Child poverty in the UK is a political football that must not be kicked into the long grass.

New Year Greetings All - we are in for a month of post-production, with edits underway on the two sponsorship DVDs for Oxford and Cambridge rugby clubs (the thigh's the limit gals) to preliminary editing of the Travellers' Tales for theatrical release. Not to mention some very technical writing which may not light up the sky, but certainly keeps the lights turned on, if you know what we mean. John is off to sunny (shurely shome mistake) Derbyshire to learn all about Save The Children for a few days, but what we want to know is who's going to save HIM from his children?? We'll keep you posted folks, meantime good luck with those resolutions.
